Dog frantically pawing at mouth

Dog frantically pawing at mouth

Dog frantically pawing at mouth to breathe.

Barely able to speak.

"The only one who really had to die."

# Chapter 8

"I've never heard of the Order, but I am not surprised that they killed our friend, especially when they knew that he was a murderer. This is a sad and sickening act."

– The Countess of Ségur

"You'd better tell them what we found," said the woman named Anna.

"I think they already know," said the older man, "but we should inform them."

"Why do you think so?" asked the Countess.

"We've just come from the room where the other bodies were found. The girl is dead, the boy is barely alive, but he's still breathing. He could die any minute."

"He's the one who killed the girl?"

"Yes, we were just there. We found the body of the girl in the bathroom, but he was already there. We took the boy back to his room."

"That's not good," said the Countess.

"They could not have known," said Anna. "No one could have foreseen that he would do such a thing."

"He was always so quiet, always quiet, not a word out of him," said the older man, "I hardly knew he was there."

"We should tell them, Father," said the Countess. "I don't like not telling them. I don't like the feeling that the Order is on its way here, and we don't know how long it will take."

"You're right," said Father Renard, "I'm not sure why they didn't tell us, but if the Order is here in the house, then we should know."

"There's still time," said Anna.

"No," said Father Renard, "it's time to go to the police. It's better that they know."

"What do you mean?" said Anna. "You think it's the Order? Do you really think that they could have something to do with the murders?"

"We should go and tell them," said the Countess, "then we'll know if they're coming."

"That's not what I mean," said Father Renard. "You're telling me that someone could be planning to come here, someone who might do anything. He might even have the power to do that. You don't think the Order has that kind of power?"

"No," said Anna, "but we must still tell the police."

"Do you think that would do any good? Would they do anything?"

"They might do something."

"No, they won't. The Order has no power."

"But the murders, they're so terrible," said the Countess.

"I know," said Father Renard, "but they have no power over us."

"I think we should still tell them," said Anna.

"No, I'm not saying that we should," said Father Renard. "It's not what I'm saying at all. It's what I'm not saying. I'm saying that you're not saying that we should."

"I just think we should know what's going on."

"I think the Order killed him," said Father Renard.

"Who? The Order?"

"Yes, the Order."

"Oh, so you don't think it was the Order?"

"I don't think it was the Order, but I think they're responsible, if it was the Order. And I also think that someone from the Order killed them, if they weren't the Order. Someone with the Order killed them."

"You're not saying they're coming here?" said the Countess.

"No, I'm not saying that. I'm saying that you're not saying that they're coming here."

"You're crazy," said Anna, "if the Order could kill someone, then it wouldn't have any power, it wouldn't even be there."

"You think that the Order has the power to kill someone?"

"Yes, I know that you think the Order has no power. I've heard you say it a hundred times, I just don't see why you're saying that about this."

"I'm saying that you're not saying that the Order has the power to kill someone. If the Order could kill someone, they wouldn't be a secret society, they'd be a government. And they don't have that kind of power."

"But they could have it," said Anna, "so how do you know they don't?"

"I'm saying that you're not saying that the Order has the power to kill someone."

"So why are you saying that they didn't do it?"

"I'm not saying that they did it. I'm saying that you're not saying that they did it. If the Order could kill someone, they would have no secret, and they wouldn't have the power. I just don't think that they can kill someone. And it's not the kind of thing they could have done without someone knowing."

"They killed a boy," said the Countess, "and they left a girl."

"I understand," said Father Renard.

"
